Frequently Asked Questions
Global Forest Generation, along with Peruvian-based ECOAN, co-leads Acción Andina and provides strategic support and direction. We contribute funds, communications support, administrative tools, and other resources to ensure the initiative can maintain and scale its restoration activities in the Andes. Our partnerships provide immediate, tangible community benefits that can measurably and immeasurably improve livelihoods, enabling at-risk populations to preserve their lands and cultures. We aim to continue scaling and sustaining Acción Andina while applying our community-driven model globally.
Global Forest Generation’s first initiative, Acción Andina, encompasses projects in six countries – Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Our focus is on high-Andean ecosystems that support a range of native wildlife and provide freshwater to homes, businesses, and agriculture throughout the continent. Our goal is to expand our efforts across all seven countries in the Andes (to include Venezuela). We will be developing additional ecosystem restoration initiatives in other parts of the world.
We only plant native trees in once-forested areas. In South America’s Andes mountains, we are focused on reforesting the native Polylepis, which means “many skins” because of its layered, papery bark. The genus Polylepis consists of 45 species, which are crucial for retaining moisture and storing water at high altitudes.
No! Supporting the planting of new forests is an important part of our work — planting the right trees in the right places at the right time. But our work is more holistic, working to restore important ecological functions and ensure resiliency to both ecosystems and communities. We depend on local knowledge to prioritize restoration sites while supporting conservation leadership opportunities.
Our community-led model means that we partner with local conservation organizations and experts most familiar with the region’s landscape, ecology, and culture. Through our initiative, Acción Andina, we also involve local and Indigenous communities, who lead nursery operations and tree-planting events. Such events bring together hundreds of people of all ages and result in tens of thousands of trees reforested in a single day. (Local communities have planted a record 150,000 trees in one event!). Grassroots conservation leaders and local communities drive the work and inform us of key environmental issues impacting the area (e.g., wildfires). Our role is to supply the tools and resources to meet their needs.

No. While we commend creative solutions to the climate crisis, we believe trees have value beyond their capability to store carbon.
We unfortunately do not currently have a formal volunteer program. But we’d love to hear your ideas and explore if one of our local conservation partners can assist you. Please reach out to [email protected].
No, we are not funders and currently focus on implementing restoration activities in the Andean region of South America. Please visit the Acción Andina website to learn more.
